When I saw this Top 100 Restaurants booklet inserted in today's Sunday Chronicle, I went right away to the index to find vegan or restaurant. It went from Thai to Vietnamese!
"No single food choice has a farther-reaching and more profoundly positive impact on our health, the environment, and all of life on Earth than choosing vegan." ABC (Alternative Baking Co.) Also, it's delicious. (Don't believe what you hear about vegan freaks.)

The Asian Coalition--a Good Cause, but Not Good for Animals or the Environment!
I love going to the Asian Coalition dinner because of the wonderful people I get to see. We have fun and, in spite of the noise, we even have some good conversations. It's also for a very good cause: scholarships for students!
But the Asian Coalition doesn't seem to be aware of the movement to a plant based diet or why people who can "eat anything" choose not to.
I wish there were a greater awareness of animal suffering in factory farms and of the negative effects livestock has on the environment.
This is what the Asian Coalition offered at the King Wah restaurant on April 27:
An assorted platter--all meat except for a corner of seaweed
Honey walnut prawns
Tofu soup with dried scallops and corn
cubed steak in Teriyaki sauce
Mushrooms with broccoli--eureka
Cantonese style crispy chicken
Fresh bean curd with pea sprouts--delicious
signature lobster
seafood friend rice
dessert of the day
The two plant-based dishes were delicious and copious, and there was plenty of tea and wine, so I didn't go hungry, but it would be nice if people were aware of the movement to plant-based.

A Sweet Memorial Gathering
A remarkable widow, who's been a vegan for 50 years, had a memorial gathering for her late husband this past Tuesday, April 24, and served lots of desserts--all of them vegan!
Showing of "The End of Meat" at Wellness Central
Last night (Wednesday, April 25) the Wellness Center was packed for dinner and the first US showing of "The End of Meat." It was exciting to see this from the German perspective as well as the American.
As always, the food Patricia prepared was delicious!
I met Mike, who told us how Lent made him vegan, Christina, Lester, James, and Kathy, who were at my table. After the showing of "The End of Meat," I met a young UC Berkeley graduate from France who's working ta Three Trees.

Earth Day with SFVS at the Civic Center
Patly and Greg Rohrbach orchestrated a very successful Earth Day Chef Zone booth at the Civic Center on Saturday, April 21! There were a lot of smiles on this beautiful day and wondrous, plant-based taste-treats.

Farm Shop and Home--What Are the Vegan Options?
The first four pictures are of dishes I made for my friend and Eileen when she came over yesterday:
Celery soup, sauerkraut, tortilla de patatas, coffee cake. (Sorry so much was beige!)
I just got back from the Farm Shop in Larkspur, where they always have a vegan appetizer and a vegan entree option--NOT ON THE MENU--But they still haven't evolved to a vegan dessert.

Very Encouraging News from England--Vegan Becoming Mainstream
This is one of the best articles I've read on the vegan movement. It's very encouraging and it's also very honest--free of hyperbole!
Thank you, Carol Fregly, for sending this to me!

What Bessie Carmichael Elementary School Is Doing for Vegetables
I'm way behind in sharing exciting vegan news, but I'll begin with a Leah Garchik Column from Wednesday, March 28, 2018!
In a column beginning "In homage to vegetables--compliments for carrots, bravo to broccoli, kudos to kohlrabi," Leah Garchik reported on kids at Bessie Carmichael Elementary who have written stories about imaginary superpowers they've gotten from eating vegetables!
The imaginary superpowers included powers to feed and house the homeless.
