Rumor had it that Canada's recommended diet was devoid of dairy, but that doesn't seem to be the cake. It is true that they're recommended very little meet, fish, poultry, meat--75 grams.
Still I think it's wonderful that
"No single food choice has a farther-reaching and more profoundly positive impact on our health, the environment, and all of life on Earth than choosing vegan." ABC (Alternative Baking Co.) Also, it's delicious. (Don't believe what you hear about vegan freaks.)

Majita at the Embarcadero Should Offer a Real Vegan Option
Majita was no problem for the two friends who wanted a vegetarian entree, but when it was my turn to order, he spoke about "leaving out the cheese."
I wanted more than an entree that was leaving something out, but I accepted it anyway and then went to Delica to get some real vegan entrees--the kind of dishes that they put things IN instead of omitting what you're paying for.
I was startled when someone from Majita came to our table and told me he was sorry but I wasn't permitted to bring outside food to their outside table.
I told him I was sorry too. I was sorry that I was going to continue eating the outside food.
I never want to be belligerent, I politely suggested that they offer vegan options so vegan clients don't have to bring outside food when they eat with friends. I reminded him of the delicious butternut tamales they serve at Christmas time. Why not throughout the year?
Later Javier treated to vegan pastries bought at Mariposa, and Mary treated to tea at the lovely tea place in the Ferry Building. We discovered a real lunch menu and plan to return for lunch there in September.

Did Yale News Plagiarize Their Vegan News from Bon Appetit?
Here's what I found when I looked up Yale News as reported in Compassionate Choices booklet given out at Stern Grove yesterday:
Editor’s note: Feb. 28, 2013
A column published Friday, “FISCHER: Eating vegan: more popular than ever,” has been removed from the News’ website after a sentence in it was found to match the exact wording of another publication. The sentence reads as follows:
According to a study by food-service provider Bon Appétit, the number of college students who identify themselves as vegetarian has risen by 50 percent since 2005, and the number of vegan students has more than doubled during the same period.
Outreach at Stern Grove
I love walking into Stern Grove for the Sunday concerts both because it's beautiful and because sometimes the orchestra is rehearsing when I get there early.
But yesterday I liked meeting two volunteers from Vegan Outreach, SteveErlsten and a woman whose name I don't know.
I thought they were handing out programs, but I liked what they WERE handing out.

I thanked them and took the picture of them. What I learned:
a 2016 Harris Poll showed that over 3 million Americans are vegan. Millions more are vegetarian.

German Minister of the Environment Will Have No Meat or Dairy at Official Functions
This was news back in February 2017, but I found out about it only recently:
The German Minister of the Environment Will Have No Meat or Dairy at Official Functions in order to set a good example for others and remind people of the connection between what we eat and global warming.

An April update: (an online report, not my effort at plagiarizing!)

An April update: (an online report, not my effort at plagiarizing!)
Environment minister Barbara Hendricks claims eating meat is damaging to the environment and has ordered only vegetarian food to be served at official government functions.
The ban came to light in an email from a senior civil servant in the environment ministry, which was sent to department heads. The email states that the ministry has a duty to mitigate against the "negative effects of meat consumption" and must "set an example". It stated that animal agriculture accounts for a significant proportion of greenhouse gas emissions.
Barbara Hendricks is a member of the Social Democrats, who have raced ahead of Angela Merkel's Christian Democrats party. Senior figures have pounced on this policy as evidence that the centre-left social democrats will meddle with citizens' private lives.
Barbara Hendricks said: “We’re not tell anyone what they should eat. But we want to set a good example for climate protection, because vegetarian food is more climate-friendly than meat and fish.”
"I'm not having this Veggie Day through the back door," Christian Schmidt, the food minister, replied.
An update in May had this to say:
Already China has
pledged to reduce its meat consumption by 50% by 2050 through changing its government-issued
dietary regulations. In many European countries, however, there is more
resistance to regulation. The German Environment Ministry's plan to no longer
serve meat at official functions was met with criticism earlier this year. In the UK,
the government has a clear preference for encouraging individuals to make the
right choices as opposed to regulating them.
Milk Tasting for the Dairy Feeling Threatened?
I was surprised to see photos of people at a "milk-tasting," provided in Hayes Valley by the Clover Dairy.

Is this their way of responding to the decline in cow-milk purchase in favor of almond milk?

Today Denise came for lunch, and I was able to serve her several vegan dishes.
