Discovery of Patrick McDonnell

 https://mutts.com/product/strip-011921/

I just happened to glance down and see this quote from MLK:  "The time is always right to do what is right," showing the Mutts and cook going to a restaurant that's been transformed to vegan.

I looked up the cartoonist Patrick McDonnell and found out he's been vegan since 2012.
https://mutts.com/2020/06/12/a-note-from-patrick-june-2020/  Here's what he says:

As a vegetarian for over 30 years and a vegan since 2012, I’ve always felt a little strange drawing the cheeses and salamis that hang over Butchie’s head. I’m feeling better because they will now be plant-based and cruelty-free.

With the pandemic, and understanding the cruelties of raising and processing “meat,” it’s more important than ever to rethink how we treat the animals — and people — on this planet. Going plant-based is a win-win. It’s good for your own health, the health of the planet, and obviously the billions of suffering, factory farmed animals.

Going veggie gets easier and easier. (Millions have already discovered new, delicious meat substitutes.) I ask everyone to do what you can. Even observing Meatless Mondays can save a billion animals each year in the United States alone. If Butchie can do it, so can you.

Galette des Rois

This was my second try, so I'm still learning.   But I think this is a good recipe:

If you're impression you can go straight to the print recipe command.

The only thing he doesn't explain is how to score the top, so here's a recipe for that:

Getting Things in Perspective Regarding the Naming of Schools

Imagine that fifty years from now there's an amendment to the US Constitution against torturing and eating animals.  This came about not because of concern for animal welfare (who cares how animals suffer if they're not our pets?) but for environmental reasons.  Still, students are educated to know--and even care--about the horrors perpetrated in factory farms  in earlier times.  They can't believe that at one time people accepted the brutal treatment of animals intended for slaughter..

Now it comes time to review the wisdom of naming certain schools after board members, and it's discovered that those board members were once eaters of animals.

"But that was the custom back then," say the defenders of school board members.  "We have to judge them in the context of the time in which they lived."

"Oh, there were lots of individuals and organizations bringing the horrors to light and insisting that farm animals were sentient beings, not inanimate objects, but they went on torturing and eating them."

Now what?

Coconut Mochi Filled with Haupia

Coconut Mochi Filled with Haupia got almost a full page in the SF Chronicle's Food Section today.  I don't think it's possible to get the URL for the food section, but here's a picture.

I don't plan to make this--too busy with egg-free eggnog and Kahlua trifle--but it's good to know it's out there.

Collage of Chloe's Holiday Dinner Christmas 2020

This is my Christmas Dinner Collage, showing what we ate and what we watched together, solo, in each of our homes! (That goes for Suzy, Kathy, Jonathan, and me.  Hilda had Sam, and Tom had Bill.)

I was relly happy with how good it was and how pretty we were able to make it.

Also in the collage are concerts and shows.
